Before reading: Ask children to describe what they see on the cover. Read the title of the book and the name of the author/illustrator. Ask, What are the mice doing? What do you think this book will be about?

As you read: You may want to read the book straight through once. On a second reading, pause on the pages where the mice each mix two colors together and ask the following questions:

  • What color do you predict the red mouse will make in a yellow puddle? Why do you think so?
  • What color do you predict the yellow mouse will make in the blue puddle?
  • What color do you predict the blue mouse will make in the red puddle?

After you read: Ask, Did the mice mixing colors remind you of the activities we’ve done together earlier in the week? Which ones? How were they similar? Discuss the colors you’ve mixed so far (red and yellow, blue and yellow). How was what we did different from what the mice did? (So far, we’ve mixed colored water but not paint.) Tell children that later today they’ll try mixing blue and red paint, just as the third mouse did.
