Hatching new scientists every day!

Week 1: Planting Seeds

Children will begin this unit by planting seeds and bulbs. They’ll predict how long it will take bean and grass seeds to sprout and then closely observe their changes using magnifying glasses. They’ll record the growth of the seedlings in their Plant Journals and on a large wall chart. They’ll grow green onion bulbs in water and compare them to the seeds. At the end of the week, children will set up several experiments to test what plants need in order to grow.

Day 1

Day 1

Today, children talk about what they know about plants and seeds. They’ll plant their first seeds: beans.

Day 2

Day 2

Today children examine sunflower seeds with magnifying glasses and plant grass seeds.

Day 3

Day 3

Today, children explore bulbs and then plant onion bulbs.

Day 4

Day 4

Today, children take a close look at the bean and grass seeds they have been growing, and set up an experiment to discover whether seeds need light to grow.

Day 5

Day 5

Yesterday, children set up an experiment to discover whether seeds need light to grow. Today, they will set up an experiment to explore whether seeds need water to grow.
