Explore and Play: Salad Sprouts Results

Investigate how your salad sprouts have grown and do a taste test.

Materials

  • salad sprouts
  • bread
  • mayonnaise or salad dressing

Key Science Concepts

  • Many of the foods we eat come from plants.
  • We eat certain leaves, roots, fruits, and seeds.

Directions

  1. Ask children to wash their hands.
  2. Talk about how the salad sprouts have grown over the week. Have someone point to the photos on the “Our Plants” chart and describe how they have changed. What parts of a plant (seed, stem, leaves, roots) can they see?
  3. Tell them you’ll now prepare sprout sandwiches together and try them.  (Or let children sample the sprouts alone rather than in a sandwich.)
    • Spread mayonnaise or salad dressing on bread.
    • Place some sprouts on the bread and place another slice of bread on top.
    • Cut sandwich into quarters and serve.
  4. Ask children to describe what the sprouts taste like.
