Read and Discuss: Eating the Alphabet

A is for Apricot, Z is for Zucchini

Materials

  • Eating the Alphabet by Lois Ehlert

Key Science Concepts

  • Many of the foods we eat come from plants.
  • We eat certain leaves, roots, fruits, and seeds.

Directions

Before you read: Tell children that you are going to re-read the book you read yesterday.

As you read: Pause at some of the fruits and vegetables and ask them to identify categories of fruits and vegetables you’ve explored this week:

  • root vegetables
  • leaf vegetables
  • citrus fruits
  • favorite vegetables and fruits

If there’s time, you can also pause at some of the fruits and vegetables with unusual names: gooseberry, kohlrabi, parsnip, pomegranate, rutabaga, star fruit, or watercress. Ask children what they think these unusual fruits and vegetables might taste like. Ask, Do they remind you of any other fruits? Do you think they would taste the same?
