NARRATOR:
It was a fine fall afternoon

and Peep and Chirp were playing
their new favorite game.

( laughing )

PEEP:
This is fun.

( laughing )

( both laughing )

CHIRP:
We should ask another turtle
to play with us.

Then we wouldn't
have to take turns.

Oh... I haven't seen
another turtle in years.

I think I'm the only one left.

PEEP:
But you're not!

We know another turtle.

Her name is Willow

and she lives under a tree,
just like you.

Well, my goodness.

How... delightful.

I wonder
if she's as old as I am.

CHIRP:
How old are you?

NEWTON:
I don't really know.

But when I was young,

this tree and I
were the same height.

Hmm... really?

Really.

I was rather dashing back then.

It would be nice
to meet someone

who remembers those days.

CHIRP:
What are we waiting for?

We'll introduce you!

Um... where does
she live, again?

PEEP:
Just over the hill.

CHIRP:
Mm-hmm.

PEEP:
Past the sunflowers
and the hollow log.

NEWTON:
I'm afraid that's
too far for me.

CHIRP:
Well, um... what if you met in
the middle-- halfway?

Then it wouldn't be too far for
either one of you.

NARRATOR:
Newton thought
that was a great idea.

So Peep and Chirp
headed over the hill

to talk to Willow.

NARRATOR:
They told her about Newton

and asked if she wanted
to meet him halfway.

WILLOW:
I'd love to.

But where is halfway, exactly?

CHIRP:
We still need
to figure that out.

Well, if you two can direct us,

I'd be pleased
to meet your friend.

NARRATOR:
So Peep and Chirp made a plan.

Peep would pretend
to be Willow

and Chirp would pretend
to be Newton.

CHIRP:
You stay here, and I'll go back
to Newton's tree.

When I get there,
I'll turn around

and then the both of us
will start walking.

Okay?

PEEP:
Okay.

PEEP:
See you halfway!

PEEP:
Chirp must be there by now,

don't you think?

WILLOW:
I really couldn't say.

PEEP:
She probably is.

I'd better start walking.

Bye!

NARRATOR:
Peep was a little too eager.

Chirp hadn't gotten
to Newton's tree yet.

CHIRP:
Willow wants to meet you.

She wants to meet
you halfway.

Ooh!

This is so exciting.

CHIRP:
But Peep and I are going
to figure out

where halfway is, first.

In fact, I have to go now.

We're supposed to...

( both grunt )

Is this halfway?

CHIRP:
No-- you must have
started too soon.

If we're going to meet
in the middle,

we have to start
at the same time.

PEEP:
But how will we do that?

NEWTON:
You need someone to yell "go."

PEEP:
Yeah, somebody loud.

CHIRP:
Somebody really loud.

Hmm...

QUACK:
♪ Oh, ducks are great
and ducks are fun ♪

♪ I'm so glad that I am one. ♪

BOTH:
Quack!

( humming )

QUACK:
What?

CHIRP:
We have a job for you.

CHIRP:
Hi, Quack!

PEEP:
Hi!

Are you ready?

( draws a deep breath )

( coughing )

Go!

( chuckles )

NARRATOR:
Thanks to Quack,

the birds started walking
at the same time.

But Chirp was moving
faster than Peep.

( whistling )

( snoring )

Hmm.

BOTH:
Hey!

PEEP:
Is this halfway?

It can't be.

I was probably
going faster than you.

( Peep sighs )

PEEP:
If only we
were both turtles.

Then we would walk
at the same speed.

BOTH:
Hmm...

BOTH:
Hey!

NARRATOR:
Here's what Peep
and Chirp discovered.

Two turtles will automatically
meet halfway

as long as they start
at the same time

and walk at the same speed.

CHIRP:
Are you ready?

If I were any more ready,
I'd pop out of my shell.

PEEP:
Quack's going to shout "go!"

WILLOW:
My toes are just tingling.

( Quack snoring )

Wait right here.

( snoring )

CHIRP:
Quack, we're waiting!

QUACK:
Huh? Oh, uh, yup.

Oh, okay, I'm, uh...

Here we go.

Go!

PEEP:
Go, Willow, you can do it!

CHIRP:
Go, go, go!

( Quack snoring )

( Peep and Chirp laughing )

No, not napping, not napping...

not, nap, not, not...

( resumes snoring )

PEEP:
All right, Newton!

Good job!

CHIRP:
You're doing great!

Go, go, go!

NARRATOR:
And so the hours crept by.

Quack slept,
the turtles... crept.

Peep and Chirp
ran themselves ragged.

( both panting )

CHIRP:
Yay...

( panting and groaning )

PEEP ( weakly ):
Go, Willow.

NARRATOR:
Finally... finally,
the two turtles met.

( Newton clears throat )

NEWTON:
Hello.

Um... your name
wouldn't be Willow,

by any chance?

WILLOW:
It is.

Hello.

You must be Newton.

( clearing his throat )

Uh, this might seem
like an odd question,

but do you remember
when that apple tree--

the one back there--
was a sapling?

WILLOW:
I think I do.

In fact, I remember

when it grew
its first apple.

WILLOW:
Oh, it was so round and red

and a little bit of yellow.

NEWTON:
You don't say.

I tasted that apple.

It fell right on my head.

And I don't remember...

NARRATOR:
In no time at all,

Newton and Willow
felt like old friends.

Peep, Quack and Chirp
were very happy for them...

or they would be,
just as soon as they woke up.
