Examining Gadgets

For a really different field trip, try a trip to a hardware store. Explore gadgets like hinges, springs, wheels, knobs, and locks and talk about them.

What do you think you use them for?

For an extension on this activity, invite your child to help you take apart an old piece of equipment left in someone's basement or garage, like an old clock. As you take it apart, look at all the component pieces and think up new uses for them.
