- My Shadow by Shelia Gore
Key Science Concepts
- A shadow shows the shape of an object, but it doesn’t show colors or many other details.
- You can change the shape of a shadow by moving and turning your body or the object making the shadow or by moving the light source.
- As you move a light source around an object, the object’s shadow moves and its length and shape may change.
- Indoors, you can change the size of a shadow by moving your body or the object closer to or farther from the light.
Directions
Before you read: Show children the cover of the book and read the title and author’s name aloud. Ask children to describe what they see on the cover. Where do they think the light is coming from that’s casting the shadow behind the girl?
While reading: Pause on page 19 when you read the question asked in the book: “Where is the light now?” When they answer the question, be sure to ask them to explain their answer.
After you read: Flip through the book and ask children to point out any activities that they’ve done over the past few weeks. Ask them to explain what they did in the activity and what discoveries they made about shadows.
